Journal #1

When I began reading this book I thought that it would be about ordinary topics, but as I got into it I realized how much it wasn't. For example, I thought that it was kind of strange, way in the beginning, for kids to make promises and plans with each other to kill people. Then as it went further and Huck staged his own death. These are only some of the interesting things. Huck thinks up some great ideas throughout the story that definitely kept me interested.

One thing that I found Huckleberry Finn doing a lot is thinking about Tom Sawyer. It was almost as though he admired him in many ways. He talked about his memories. Also every once and a while he would say what he thought Tom would do in a certain situation. When I was reading this I thought of Catcher In The Rye, because Holden always seemed to have Allie on his mind also. Even though Tom isn't dead, he is not around so Huck is thinking about him. It is as though Holden and Huck admire them and wish that they had as much intelligence as they do. I thought that this connection fit nicely with both stories.

Another interesting event was when Huck goes into town dressed up as a girl trying to retrieve information. It seems that it was just way too easy for him to get all of this update on the town so quickly. As I kept reading, I thought that there was going to be some kind of catch involved. After a while I gave up on that idea, but I still thought that it should have been more work for Huck than it had been.

In conclusion, I feel that the half of this book that is still to come will be very complex and interesting. The whole idea of this kid running away starting off by himself is pretty amazing in itself. Huck, to me, is a very brave boy with a lot of determination. I am looking forward to some more adventure.
